Stories of the O&W Railroad
The O&W Railway ran through the heart of Ulster County from its border with Sullivan County up the Rondout and Esopus valleys to Kingston. Many of us now walk or cycle along the rail trail that was the bed of this 1902 branch of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway. While she was creating an exhibit on this O&W Kingston Branch, Gail Whistance collected stories and “then & now” photographs of each station along the route as it went through our county. Ms. Whistance will present what she has learned about the stations which for a time were the lifeblood of their respective communities. The stories were obtained from oral interviews, the O&W archives in Middletown, and contemporaneous newspaper reports. Take a trip on the O&W between Spring Glen and Kingston, and stop at the 11 stations along the way!
